Surgery using only hypnosis for pain relief

A woman in the United Kingdom underwent surgery on her knee using only hypnosis for pain management.

Prior to the surgery, Bernadine Coady told herself “I’m not going to have any pain, and I won’t have any pain”. She also visualized the procedure in great detail to help prepare herself. Coady added “I wish I had a mirror to see it (the surgery), really”.

Afterward, when asked how the procedure went, Coady calmly replied that during the procedure she felt “Just tugging and pulling”. Asked about whether she would recommend it to others, Coady said “Everybody! Anybody, can do it”. Coady was quite emphatic that it’s all in the mind.

Personally, although a great believer in hypnosis, I think I may need to do a little more self hypnosis practice before presenting for surgery with a smile and declining aneasthetic.
